I’m Alan Wells and my whole career been about raising standards in education.
My Experience
I was Director of the Government funded but independent Basic Skills Agency for almost 30 years. In that time I saw practice in almost every local authority in England and Wales and in many other industrialised countries.
In the last five years I have been to more than 4,000 schools, colleges and in adult education services. I now offer others the benefit of this experience through this education consultancy.
During my career I:
- have kept raising standards of education, literacy and numeracy in the public eye even when unfashionable;
- was the specialist adviser to Lord Moser’s Committee that led to national strategies to reduce the number of adults with poor literacy and numeracy;
- was the architect of the Basic Skills Quality Mark for Schools that sets minimum standards in the teaching of literacy and numeracy;
- created the Basic Skills Employer Pledge that is part of the National Strategy in Wales and has been recommended for introduction in England;
- led the Basic Skills Agency’s Consultancy and Advisory Service;
- have written frequently about basic skills including pieces for the Guardian and the TES.
What my Education Consultancy Services Cost
I charge £600 a day plus expenses. Because I believe it is good to give as well as receive, I donate 10% of my consultancy income to Harambee Schools Kenya, a small charity that works to support a number of schools in Kenya.
